About Me

I hope that what I post here and what you read may in some way encourage, challenge, inspire, or simply interest you... The Week 1 - 21 posts are a series dedicated to EXCEL School of Performing Arts Tour 2015. It's impossible to capture the whole experience, but here I choose to share at least one thing I learnt in each week of XLTT15.

Right Where He Wants Me

After I was announced as being on Tour Team for 2015, I knew I just had a few months over summer before heading into a crazy year... I decided what I really needed to do was to earn some money so that I could put it toward expenses next year and get some savings behind me. Previously I worked in the cafe at Staglands Wildlife Reserve serving customers, making food, and doing stack loads upon STACK LOADS of dishes! I thought I had a high chance of them hiring me over summer, so I made the decision to stay in Upper Hutt from November - end of January... The only thing was... After that decision was made, I heard back from the manager saying that they couldn't hire me as they already had additional summer staff.

Ugh.

Now I felt stuck. It was going to be the end of November by the time I was back in the Hutt and I started to feel preeeeetty doubtful about finding any work. And so... I started praying.

I really didn't want this summer to be wasted. I really wanted to be productive. To be effective. Not to just cruise through life waiting for the next exciting thing, but to be serving God faithfully, right where He wanted me to be.

So pray I did. And I asked other people to pray too. Family, friends, my church.

I got to Upper Hutt and I put together my CV. I asked God how many copies I should print off and I felt like I got the answer "five"... However I was scared that wouldn't be enough because I kind of had the idea that I would just go into stores and give my CV to anyone who would take it and I wasn't totally sure if the number five was from God or if I just made that up so... I printed off ten copies. The thought crossed my mind, "What if I end up giving out exactly five copies. That would be showing God's sense of humour!"

WELL...

I caught the bus into town but as soon as I stepped off that bus, a wave of negativity and nervousness just flooded me. I got all scared and all that positivity and confidence I usually exhibit just flew away somewhere! I was like... now what?! I wandered around for a bit unsure of myself and eventually I was just sitting on a seat in the Mall. I started praying again: "God, please, I need your help. Get rid of these feelings and voices that are attacking me right now. Please lead me to where I should go."

I went up to the help desk in Farmers and said to the guy standing there, "Hi, my name's Sonya. I was just wondering if you were hiring over summer?" He said "Yeah. Actually, that's our manager standing right there if you want to talk to her?" So now I'm thinking OHHH SNAP I HAVE TO APPROACH THE MANAGER?! But God's peace and boldness just came over me and up I walked... I asked the same question and she looks at me saying "YES! Do you know I've had about SIX people fall through on me on this position! Are you busy right now?" I'm like, "Uh nope." And she just straight up asks the question, "Can I take you for an interview right now?" I was quite taken-aback like I did not expect that question but of course I agreed.

It was my very first job interview but it went fantastic! She was impressed and I liked what she had to say about the position and the company. Towards the end she says, "Honestly, you are like a Saint! You walked in here at just the perfect time. We'll just check your references and if they come back good we'll get you back in here and we'll talk contracts!"

LIKE WHAT?!?!?!?!?!

I left that place head held high with a huge smile on my face and jumped on the bus home to go fill out an online application form I needed to complete.

The next week, I received a phone call, "Hi it's Nadia here from Farmers Upper Hutt. We'd like to offer you a position as a Christmas casual." Contract was signed later that day and I've now completed my first week on the job. It's enjoyable work and is a great fit for me right now as I'm gaining awesome experience, learning new skills, developing ones I already have, meeting new people, helping and serving which is one of my all time favourite things to do AND I'm earning some money to help out my future adventures.

I simply can not put this down to coincidence. To me, this was planned out and fit together perfectly by my God.

It's funny... I realised that even though I believed that God COULD provide... and I trusted that God WOULD provide... I was still so shocked, surprised, and blown away when He DID!

Oh and I gave out how many copies of my CV? Answer: ONE. That went to the manager of Farmers who hired me! Oh God, you sneaky fella!
