About Me

I hope that what I post here and what you read may in some way encourage, challenge, inspire, or simply interest you... The Week 1 - 21 posts are a series dedicated to EXCEL School of Performing Arts Tour 2015. It's impossible to capture the whole experience, but here I choose to share at least one thing I learnt in each week of XLTT15.

What a Privilege

Yesterday between classes I was sitting on the couch in the Excel drama room with the other drama majors. Randomly I started singing this hymn,

'What a friend we have in Jesus

All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer

Is there trial and temptation

Is there sorrow anywhere
You should never be discouraged
Take it to the Lord in prayer.'

I don't know where it came from, I wasn't thinking about it I just started singing... Anyway, later in the day we had technique/performance theatre class. I was struggling with the way this particular tutor teaches as she will tell me how to do something one day, I'll do that, and the next day she says it's wrong - do it like this and completely changes it! This is rather frustrating and makes me feel like I'm not making any progress on this piece.

My friend who's doing this script with me and I went to an empty room upstairs to rehearse/work on it while our tutor worked with our classmates on their pieces. When we got there I voiced what I just explained and we were both sighing about how difficult these particular characters are to play and our struggles with them. My friend said, "Are you okay?" I said, "Ehh not really." and she, being the wise gal that she is, suggested, "Should we pray?" To which my enthusiastic response was, "Yes!".

Handing it all over to Jesus helped immensely and we were able to work on this script for the next half hour with God's help.

It was only later on that I connected the dots of the hymn that had come to mind earlier in the day and what had happened with praying over the situation. My conclusion to this -

What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
